80 Years of Vespa: Commemorative Coin Issued Today

Rome, 25 June 2026 – For some, it is the symbol of Italy’s post-war rebirth; for others, it evokes journeys, encounters and dreams. For eighty years, Vespa has accompanied the story of Italy across generations, evolving from a means of transport into a true global icon of Italian style. To celebrate this extraordinary milestone, a €5 silver coin dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Vespa joins the 2026 Italian Republic Numismatic Collection today. The coin is issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and produced by the Italian State Mint.

The official presentation took place at the Vespa Village in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini, who expressed his satisfaction with today’s issue, noting that it further confirms—if any confirmation were needed—what Vespa represents in the history of our country. Joining him were Matteo Colaninno, Executive Chairman of the Piaggio Group; Michele Colaninno, CEO of the Piaggio Group; and Michele Sciscioli, CEO of the Italian State Mint.

The obverse features the official 80th Anniversary Vespa logo, while the reverse brings together past and present through the depiction of two iconic models: the 1946 Vespa 98, which marked the beginning of a story destined to become legendary, and the Vespa Primavera 80th Anniversary edition, a contemporary expression of a timeless legend. Enclosed within the distinctive hexagon inspired by the Piaggio brand, the two models tell a journey spanning eight decades, encapsulated by the inscription “VESPA. FOREVER ICONIC”, which highlights the cultural and symbolic significance of a vehicle that has become part of the global collective imagination.

The €5 “80th Anniversary Vespa” coin, issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and produced by the Italian State Mint, was designed by engraver Valerio De Seta.
