L'Aquila, Capital of Renewal

A €5 copper coin celebrates the Italian Capital of Culture 2026

Art, culture and identity come together in a new release from the Italian Republic’s 2026 Numismatic Collection, celebrating L’Aquila as Italy’s Capital of Culture 2026. The €5 copper coin pays tribute to a city that has transformed its history into a powerful story of cultural renewal and resilience.

The obverse features the façade of the Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio, highlighting its iconic rose window, while the reverse is dedicated to the Fountain of the 99 Cannelle, one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks. Together, these two symbols capture the spirit and heritage of the capital of Italy’s Abruzzo region. Part of the Italian Capitals of Culture series and issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the coin was designed by State Mint engraver Uliana Pernazza.

Released alongside the commemorative coin is the 2026 Divisional Coin Set in Brilliant Uncirculated finish, featuring all eight Italian circulating coins issued in 2026.
