Numismatic Three-Coin Set Honouring Saint Francis Presented in Assisi
Coin designs created through a collaboration between Italy, Vatican City, and San Marino were unveiled in Assisi to honour Saint Francis and the enduring message of the Canticle of the Creatures.
14 May 2026 – In the Cimabue Hall of the Sacred Convent of Assisi, before an audience of more than 200 representatives from civil, religious, and cultural institutions, the three-coin set dedicated to the Canticle of the Creatures was officially presented today. The issue was jointly released by the Vatican City State, San Marino, and Italy to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi.
The coins, struck by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, translate into images some of the most celebrated verses of the Canticle, from the praise of the sun and moon to the tribute to Sister Death.
Representatives of the three issuing states took part in the conference: Sister Raffaella Petrini, President of the Governorate of Vatican City State; Matteo Taglienti, Commercial Manager of IPZS; and Gianluca Amici, Director General of Poste San Marino. Also attending were Archbishop Felice Accrocca, Bishop of Assisi–Nocera Umbra–Gualdo Tadino and Foligno; Valter Stoppini, Mayor of Assisi; Stefania Proietti, President of the Umbria Region; Fr. Marco Moroni, OFMConv, Custos of the Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi; Fr. Giulio Cesareo, OFMConv; Fr. Luca Di Pasquale, OFM; and Marina Rosati, member of the National Committee for the Celebrations of the 800th Anniversary of the Death of Saint Francis, all of whom supported the project.
