Numismatics, Coin Celebrating the International Year of Women in Agriculture Presented at FAO
The issue celebrates the fundamental role of women in safeguarding food security
Rome, 5 March 2026 – The €5 commemorative coin from the 2026 Numismatic Collection of the Italian Republic was presented today during an event dedicated to the International Year of Women Farmers, promoted by the United Nations System and coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The coin pays tribute to the fundamental role of women in agri-food systems, recognising their contribution to food security, the sustainable management of natural resources, the protection of biodiversity, and the preservation of rural traditions.
The issue aims to raise awareness of the challenges many women farmers continue to face in accessing resources, services, and economic opportunities. In this context, care, stewardship, and collaboration are highlighted as key elements for fostering sustainable and inclusive development, in line with the objectives promoted internationally by the FAO.
The face chosen as the symbol of the initiative is Cristina Brizzolari, rice farmer and President of Coldiretti Piemonte, whose professional career reflects the commitment, leadership, and expertise of women in the agricultural sector.
The “International Year of Women Farmers – FAO” coin is issued by the Ministry of Economy and Finance and produced by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato. Designed by artist-engraver Annalisa Masini, the coin is struck in 925‰ silver, features coloured elements and a Proof finish, and was minted at the State Mint’s workshops.
